A really simple way to ensure you go to bed on time is to use a ‘bedtime alarm clock’. Sorry i couldn’t find a catchier name than that. Simple concept. Set an alarm for going to bed at least 30 minutes before going to bed at night. When the alarm rings, it is absolutely time to stop doing what you are doing and get ready for bed.
We set alarms to wake up but if you are deprived of sleep and need a push to go hit the sack, a simple trick you can use is to set an alarm clock for bedtime. The only point to note is not to go overboard with this because your mind will eventually rebel further if you set too many alarms at bedtime. You don’t have to live your live to an alarm but its a good reminder to ensure you at least initiate the process of going to bed. I recommend a softer ring tone for bedtime alarms that will tell you when to go to bed.
If you have a severe bedtime procrastination problem related to smartphone usage, then its worth installing an app like Flipd listed on my recommended apps page to prevent device usage after a specified time. I let Flipd get activated at the same time as my bedtime alarm. How do I do this?
Well, I use the ‘Automate-it‘ app on my android phone to trigger Flipd which then encourages me to ‘Flip off’. Pretty nifty huh?
